The trailer for Machine Gun Preacher (2011) features vintage Gerard Butler

A few months ago, Gerard Butler received rave reviews after the initial screening for Machine Gun Preacher (2011).  Critics claim that he is a veritable Oscar-nominee for his amazing performance in the film.  Watching the first trailer, you get a glimpse at his forceful turn in a film that seems like one that awards voters tend to favor.

Machine Gun Preacher recounts the story of Sam Childers, the former biker-criminal turned preacher-defender of Sudanese children and refugees.  Directed by Marc Forster (Monster’s Ball, Stranger than Fiction, The Kite Runner, Quantum of Solace), the film looks like an inspiring yet gritty crowd-pleaser with solid action.  The preview isn’t spectacular, with a few false notes that hopefully are just out-of-context mediocre, but the film remains a promising one.  It found its way onto my Most Anticipated Films list recently, largely thanks to the hype surrounding Butler’s performance.  Indeed, it is great to see Butler making some better career choices lately, moving away from mediocre action-flicks and sell-out rom-coms and back to his raw style while stretching his dramatic acting legs a bit too.  You can also catch him in the upcoming modern-day Shakespeare play Coriolanus (2011), directed by and co-staring Ralph Fiennes (more information and a trailer for that film can be found HERE).

Machine Gun Preacher – starring Gerard Butler, Michelle Monaghan, Michael Shannon, Kathy Baker, and Souleymane Sy Savane – opens initially on a very limited release on September 23, 2011.

That looks really interesting. I think Gerard Butler is a good choice too because he has that “bad boy with good intentions” kinda image. Like in Law Abiding Citizen. He has the kind of appearance and demeanor to be a character who isn’t an angel but will still get the audience on his side. I also can’t believe this is based on a true story. Pretty amazing.
